“Now it is useless to say who is right, who is wrong. Now what you have to do is stop the war,” the Brazilian president said at a press conference in Spain.

brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvacriticized by Westerners for considering his position towards Moscow lukewarm, insisted this Wednesday (04.26.2023) in Madrid that Russia and Ukraine have to negotiate peace and there is “no use saying who is right” in the war they are waging.

“Nobody can have any doubt that we Brazilians condemn Russia’s territorial violation once morest Ukraine. The mistake happened, the war started,” Lula said at a press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a two-day visit to Spain.

However, Lula added, “now it is useless to say who is right, who is wrong. Now what we have to do is stop the war.” Lula said that she felt that she was preaching “in the desert” in favor of peace.

“There is no one who says peace, except me, who shouts peace as if I were alone in the desert,” he said.

Without forgetting the aggressor of the war

Sánchez, on the other hand, asked to keep in mind that the conflict started with the Russian invasion, in February 2022. “It is important that we all get involved” in ending the war, Sánchez estimated, but “without forgetting that in this war, there are an aggressor and there is a victim: the aggressor is [el presidente ruso Vladimir] Putin and the attacked, in this case it is a people that the only thing it does is fight for territorial integrity, for its national sovereignty and for its freedom”.

Lula has clashed with the United States, Europe and Ukraine following, following meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he accused the United States of “encouraging war” in Ukraine, and asked the EU to “start talking regarding peace”.

He had previously maintained that the responsibilities of the war unleashed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 are shared between the two countries.
