The Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation definitively approved on Wednesday evening the draft decree committing the FWB to mobilize over the coming years one billion euros on an exceptional basis for the renovation of school buildings.
With this money, the FWB intends to support construction or renovation projects that will be presented to it (and co-financed) by the various organizing authorities (PO) for a total investment of 1.5 billion euros.
The text, which won the unanimous vote of the deputies, provides for the launch of four calls for projects – including the first by this month already June – targeting all networks and levels of education combined. A certain number of eligibility criteria have been set in order to benefit from aid.
The sites must therefore be part of an energy and climate transition objective. Architectural quality will also be taken into account, as will the well-being of students and teachers.
This exceptional investment of one billion euros over the decade will come on top of the structural budgets that the FWB devotes each year to its school buildings, as well as the 269 million euros received from the European Union in the as part of its recovery plan.
During this legislature alone, some 2 billion works have already been planned in schools. But the minister in charge of this file, Frédéric Daerden (PS), recognizes that it is 8 to 9 billion euros which will be generally necessary to restore all the school buildings in condition.
