If in recent years the tax authorities were mainly interested in undeclared swimming pools, with AI, they will now track house extensions and garden sheds.
You made a extension of your house without respecting the rules in force*? Artificial intelligence (AI) is likely to flush you out…From 2024, house extensions (and verandas) will be targeted by the tax authorities. With AI, tax officials have a ‘super servant’… The latter is now able to distinguish (thanks to satellites) a swimming pool from a jacuzzi or a pond…
7,200 undeclared swimming pools unmasked in the Bouches-du-Rhône department alone
In the Bouches-du-Rhône department, tax inspectors have, thanks to artificial intelligence, identified 7,200 undeclared swimming pools in just a few clicks! On average, owning a swimming pool increases the property tax by around 200 euros per year.
AI to find suspicious house extensions
Now tax officials are using AI to find suspicious house extensions: “The idea is to make our new tool profitable until the end and to continue to levy the tax which is our DNA”. A ‘house extension’ is considered to be an extension with a closed habitable construction (attached to the house) which modifies the initial structure of the dwellings.
Garden sheds larger than 5 M2 will also be sought by tax officials since they are subject to development tax and/or property tax. Indeed, they can be used as an extra bedroom, notes a tax official.
* A house extension may require a prior declaration of work or a building permit, from your town hall.
