Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a telephone conversation. It was the first time the two sides had spoken since Russia launched a full-scale invasion more than a year ago.
During the meeting, Xi insisted to Zelensky that negotiations were the only solution to the war, state television reported. China said it would send a representative to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Zelensky tweeted following the meeting that “this call, along with the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will be a powerful impetus for developing bilateral relations.”
I had a long and meaningful phone call with ???????? President Xi Jinping. I believe that this call, as well as the appointment of Ukraine’s ambassador to China, will give a powerful impetus to the development of our bilateral relations.

As the war launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin enters its second year, China is trying to position itself as a neutral mediator. He recently launched a 12-point proposal for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis, which was quickly dismissed by Ukraine’s backers as a unilateral move to Russia.
