Dinu Octavian Nicolescu, director of the Romanian Customs Authority, detained for influence peddling

DNA prosecutors have ordered the detention of Dinu Octavian Nicolescu for acts committed during the period when he held the position of economic director within the Ministry of the Environment, informs Agerpres.

The current director of the Romanian Customs Authority is accused of influence peddling, following allegedly asking for money in April 2020 from a witness in the file in order to exercise the influence that he would have let it be understood that he had on some public officials within Ministry of the Environment.

“In April 2020, the defendant Nicolescu Dinu-Octavian, through an intermediary, allegedly demanded the sum of 1,000,000 lei from a businessman (the witness in question) in order to exercise the influence that he would have allowed to it is understood that he had it over some civil servants from the Ministry of the Environment and that he would cause them to order the cancellation of the tax obligations, in the amount of 5,699,189 lei, which the businessman’s company had to pay to the Environment Fund Administration “, informs the National Anticorruption Directorate.

On April 13 and 14, 2020, Dinu-Octavian Nicolescu, through the same intermediary, allegedly received the total amount of 995,000 lei in two installments (500,000 lei and 495,000 lei).

According to DNA, the alleged “dispute” that the businessman’s company had with the Environmental Fund Administration has not been “resolved” until now.

The defendant was informed of the procedural quality and the accusations, in accordance with the provisions of art. 307 and art. 309 Criminal Procedure Code.

“On April 26, 2023, the defendant is to be presented to the Bucharest Court with a proposal for preventive arrest for 30 days,” DNA said.
