This Monday, April 24, 2023, the President of the National Communication Council, Vestine Nahimana hosted a press briefing, in which she announced the ban on the broadcast of 31 Burundian and foreign songs because “offending morality and good morals”. This decision has not gone unnoticed in the world ofindasi Burundian.
April 24, 2023 was an eventful day. First there was theikiyago spokespersons of government institutions, then the public hearing of the Attorney General and finally the press briefing of the CNC. The latter attracted the most attention from Burundian artists because several Burundian songs appeared on the list of songs now banned from broadcasting, even the oldest ones like Nyaranja of the late Christophe Matata and That’s how men eat dogs and pay for it de feu Léonard Is the Shepherd.
Some reactions from the artists
An artist who preferred to remain anonymous confided in this case: “We should not be censored when our sector is not accompanied by the very people responsible for censoring us. They should support us more, to better know our field and what is fashionable and on the market. Several songs that were censored required fortunes to be produced. Some artists had not yet recovered the investment they made. What has the CNC already done to bring artists to truly respect morals? Does he have (the CNC) taken the time to advise the artists before sanctioning them? »
Dj Philbyte agrees: “I think that in the same way that we hasten to take censorship measures once morest artists who have ‘derailed’, we should also support them when there is a need for support.”
On his Facebook page, B-Face On The’flo did not fail to react: “We are asking the CNC to also release the list of songs he liked in the same way that he released the list of songs to be banned from radio and television. That way, as he has discouraged some people, that he at least encourages others instead of only seeing the bad. Also support what is good. »
The ‘’satellite’’ de Buja reacted in his own way…
Note that no Sat-B song is on the famous list. On his twitter account, he also reacted: “It pains me to see that these songs are no longer authorized to be broadcast on Burundian radio stations, although mine are not affected”
He continues, a bit pretentious: “When the youth stop loving anything, then we can resume concerts with massive turnouts as before. If that doesn’t work, come let me teach you music. »
This little comment from Sat-B was obviously accompanied by a Nota bene in which he more or less encourages his peers: “Courage to all our artists. That is a good thing for our future generations…”
What regarding the censorship?
According to Francis Muhire, a Burundian artist, censorship exists in art even if the ideal would be that there is none: “In general, censorship in art is not ideal, but sometimes it is necessary. “. He gives the example of the United States, where for certain songs and videos, the mention “parental control” is added, which means that parents must clearly view the images before allowing their children to eat them. Even in films, he says, it is internationally known, they specify the age of those who should not watch this or that film.
For Mr. Muhire, a good artist is one who knows how to produce a work that is difficult to censor. This means, he explains, that he must know how to use metaphors in his songs or use poetic turns.
He concludes his remarks with a nod to the authorities empowered in censorship: “They should not prevent these songs from being broadcast, but rather resort to the various censorship techniques following the example of the United States so that each artist is aware of the consequences that will follow the words and images that will have been used in their songs. . ». He also advises the media to think regarding all these censorship techniques.
