Abu Dhabi: Report that the UAE lunar mission has failed. UAE’s Rashid rover failed to land on lunar surface, Dubai Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center officials said. Iraq might not be due to technical problems. The lander reached the lunar surface at 8.40 UAE time last night. But minutes before landing, contact with the spacecraft was lost.

The mission was carried out in collaboration with Japan’s private space agency iSpace. The Rashid rover is the Arab world’s first lunar probe. Communication with the lander was possible until just before landing. Ispace said it is trying to communicate with the lander.

The Rashid rover was planned to land in the Atlas Crater area in the northeast region of the Moon. This is an unexplored area. The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center also announced that it will conduct a second mission on Wednesday. If this also fails, iSpace stated that May 1 and three more dates are under consideration for landing.

Landing on the lunar surface is not an easy task. It will be possible only following overcoming many challenges. Gravity and the absence of atmosphere pose a major challenge to landing. Officials also informed that only 50 percent of attempts to land on the lunar surface have been successful. Completing the second phase of the mission will make the UAE the fourth country following the US, Soviet Union and China to successfully land a probe on the moon and complete the mission.
