As part of the demonstrations of the 63rd anniversary of the independence of Togo, the Head of State Faure Gnassingbé proceeded on April 24, 2023, to the laying of the first stone for the construction works of the University of Kara.
After twenty years in temporary premises, the second public university in Togo will soon have a campus built to the required standards.
The objective is to offer an optimal framework for studies and research, in accordance with the vision of quality education promoted by the authorities of the country.
“Our ambition is to establish and promote a center of higher education and research, in each region of our country”, indeed indicated Faure Gnassingbé, encouraging the university world to maintain the culture of excellence because says -il, “the quality of the human resources trained there depends on it”.
“No country can be built without competent and quality human capital. Today’s event is part of the vision of the Head of State for Togolese youth, that of building a strong university with strong institutions that allow the placement of well-trained people on the labor market,” indicated the Minister of Higher Education and Research, Prof. Majesty Ihou Watéba.
The president of Kara University, Komla Sanda, was delighted with the realization of this construction project. He asked the beneficiaries to take great care of the new infrastructure that will be built for the benefit of the community and the student youth.
The site is located in Pya in the Kozah 2 commune, not far from the national road N°1 and regarding 12 km north of the town of Kara. It will be a question of constructing in the first phase of the project, five main buildings on an area of approximately 18,600 m2 with various roads and networks.
The project also provides for the construction of annexes for the needs of fire water supply and water tower, micro wastewater treatment plant, car parks, sports fields, convenience stores, and checkpoints. and safety with toilets and changing rooms among others.
The information indicates that the final campus will be built on a site of approximately 250,000 m2and will include 09 faculties, a presidency, a large central library, administrative infrastructures, a university hospital centre, a guest house, student accommodation, university restaurants and green spaces for leisure and sports.
It is since January 23, 2004 that the University of Kara has officially started its activities in particular with regarding thirty teachers for 1537 students. To date, the institution has 212 teacher-researchers including 21 holders for a staff of 20,608 students including 7005 girls and an administrative and technical staff composed of 522 agents.
