While the text of the Commitments was regularly included on the agenda of the Education Committee, the elected representatives of the majority, as permitted by the rules of the assembly, approved a point of order to modify on the spot the agenda in order to remove consideration of the opposition’s proposal.
On behalf of the majority, MP Delphine Chabbert (PS) justified this decision – which is unusual to say the least in committee – because of the “premature” nature of the proposed arrangements which, according to her, would risk “creating chaos” in schools. .
“On a reform of this magnitude, it seems absolutely essential to us to have, in order to be able to work seriously, at least a full year to assess the real impacts of reform”, defended the elected socialist.
The majority also regretted not having had the text of the Engagés sufficiently in advance (13 days, editor’s note) to be able to examine it in depth.
Answers that did not really convince the opposition Les Engagés qualifying the maneuver as a “complete denial of democracy” (…) while “thousands of parents and teachers are waiting for a discussion on the subject to find solutions”, lambasted Mathilde Vandorpe.
The opposition also brushed aside the argument that the deadline was too short, the texts tabled by the government being very often barely five days before their examination and vote in committee.
Since the last school year, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation has applied new school rhythms with the consequence that the holidays are now partly out of sync with Flanders and the German-speaking Community.
This discrepancy is particularly problematic for families with children attending school in the two Communities.
It also complicates the life of schools practicing linguistic immersion, the ‘native speakers’ teachers no longer having their holidays at the same time as their own children.
According to the opposition Les Engagés, some 80,000 children would thus be penalized by these new rhythms, out of a total of more than 900,000 pupils in FWB.
