The Complexus Care holistic health center, housed in an anonymous villa in Pélissanne, has been selling the promise of “another health approach” to its 6,000 customers for two years. But today, reports are multiplying to denounce the worrying excesses of this company created by a well-being influencer, in connection with practitioners in Belgium. We have investigated this case which the French health authorities and a union, the CFDT Paca, are seizing today.
“Hocinegate”. On Facebook, this private discussion group was created in the fall of 2022. It had some 443 members last week, the majority of whom say they are “victims” of Complex Care and “catastrophic treatment”. Fanciful prescriptions, side effects, erratic follow-up but also bills of several thousand euros for some: over the posts, it is first of all the disarray of the patients which is reflected. Uncontrolled weight gain, hair loss, depression, extreme fatigue, hypertension, endless periods, and for some, hospitalizations, these patients, who are most often female patients, live in all regions of France. They tell the story of a hope for healing, at least for well-being, and then, over time, a trust that has been eroded.
“My relatives had warned me, but I put it on a pedestal”
“My relatives had warned me, but Hocine, I put him on a pedestal. When I discovered the group, I fell 25 floors.” Marion, 35, is a banking executive in Clermont-Ferrant. Like most Complexus Care clients, the young woman, suffering from hypothyroidism, was first “seduced” by the charisma of Hocine Sekkiou, his energy: “He would tell me he had a doctorate in biochemistry, he would bring up things like this infertile woman who got pregnant following being treated by him”, she says today. In January 2020, she herself was then in a situation “medical wandering”and agrees to carry out “blood and urine tests” in the Belgian laboratory suggested by Complexus Care “pour 200€“, following which she will continue with video consultations from 60 to 180€; in the end, she estimates that she spent €2,000.
“I am prescribed hydrocortisone and Euthyral, methylprednisolone (Medrol). It was a Belgian doctor whom I have never seen, neither in person nor in video, who made the prescription. To the questions she then says she asks Hocine Sekkiou, the latter replies that “everything is validated by the scientific committee”. words that “reassure” Marion. But when her pharmacist reads the prescription, she is alarmed: “You’re still not going to take this for six months?”it clicks. “I went to see an endocrinologist who, in turn, was amazed. ‘You absolutely don’t need all that,’ he told me”. At the beginning of March, Marion filed a complaint for “illegal practice”. According to our information, in Paris, regarding ten patients, some having followed the prescriptions and advice issued by Complexus Care for many months, and claiming to have suffered very significant health consequences, are preparing to do the same. “In the end, the number will surely be greater”believes their lawyer, who is currently finalizing the collective complaint that she intends to file with the administrative court as well as in criminal proceedings, in Paris and Marseille.
On Facebook, the administrator of the Hocinegate group, G., is a Parisian pharmacist whom we have also contacted in recent days. He is one of the first health professionals to have tried to sound the alarm on the practices of Complexus Care and “redirect people, lost in the complete desert following their misadventures. Like many, I was first interested and seduced by certain videos by Hocine Sekkiou, especially those dealing with nutrition”, he admits today. But in the face of certain speeches “virulent” once morest conventional drugs, his distrust set in: “From that moment, when I wanted to challenge him on social networks to talk regarding it calmly, he blocked me.”
