GM and Samsung announce US battery plant

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — General Motors and South Korean firm Samsung SDI plan to spend more than $3 billion to build a new battery cell factory in the United States, the companies said Tuesday.

The companies did not announce the location of the new plant, which is expected to start operations in 2026, according to their statement.

GM and Samsung SDI planned to jointly operate the plant, which will make nickel cylindrical and prismatic cells.

This is GM’s fourth venture to make battery cells. The company has announced another three with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution.

The new facility will have more than 30 gigawatt hours of capacity and will increase GM’s ability to produce battery cells in the United States to regarding 160 gigawatt hours when at full capacity, the companies said.

GM has promised to sell only electric vehicles by 2030.
