Delhaize claims to have closed the two supermarkets following acts of vandalism. Their seriousness is such that some employees have decided to file a complaint, explains a spokesperson for the brand.
At least two closing days
The closure will be effective for at least two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) and then will be reassessed. Staff from these two stores wishing to work will be sent to other branches. Those who do not want to work have been asked to go on strike or take time off.
According to the unions, Delhaize requested the intervention of the police in Flagey since some workers refused to leave the store. Still according to the workers’ representatives, the police did not intervene, however, at the request of the mayor of Ixelles Christos Doulkeridis, the latter judging that their role is not to intervene in a social conflict.
Violent behavior
The union common front denounces management behavior that is “increasingly violent”. For the CNE, the Setca and the CGSLB, these closures correspond to a ‘lock-out’, ie the temporary closure of a company decided by the employer to respond to a collective conflict such as a strike. A process which, according to these organizations, is generally used when a strike is partial, in order to put pressure on the strikers, the non-strikers then no longer being paid.

According to him, the management is indeed circumventing the union delegation by having the workers sign a document so that they go to work in another store. “However, it is stipulated in the work regulations that the agreement of the union delegation is required in the event of a transfer”, recall the CNE, the Setca and the CGSLB.
Recall of facts
Since March 7 and the announcement by the management to franchise the 128 integrated Delhaize stores, the unions have been carrying out strike action in the supermarkets. Monday morning, six stores were still closed.
