The ARS alerts the inhabitants of Île-de-France with chicken coops. The eggs laid by their hens can be temporarily toxic.

By choice or because of soaring prices, many French people now want to produce themselves what they consume on a daily basis. If the vegetable garden remains very popular, the chicken coop trend gaining more and more followers every year.

Moreover, installing this structure is very affordable, both in terms of space required and price. In addition, eating eggs would be beneficial for cardiovascular health. In fact, chicken coops are multiplying in France, including in highly urbanized regions such as Île-de-France.

But on April 19, the local branch of the Regional Health Agency issued an alert bulletin. She invites residents of Île-de-France to no longer consume eggs laid in their chicken coops until further notice. The cause: contamination with pollutants.

Dioxins discovered in several samples taken in Île-de-France

This alert originated in a report made in February 2022 by a group of zero waste associations. Following this event, the ARS took samples from individuals with chicken coops. A total of 25 samples were taken, in the largest cities of the Paris region.

It appears that out of the 25 samples, 14 of them were near incinerators emanating potentially toxic substances. But on many samples, including outside these areas, the researchers have noted the presence of dioxins resulting from the combustion of waste.

However, the ARS specifies that the consumption of these dioxins can have side effects on our health. Among the risks mentioned, specialists speak of endocrine disruptors, fertility disorders as well asincreased risk of cancer. In fact, you should avoid eating the eggs laid by your hens since the week of April 17.

A press release that only concerns domestic chicken coops for the moment

The alert is given until further notice but only concerns domestic chicken coops. Eggs laid on farms and offered for sale are not affected by this preventive measure. In addition, it currently only applies to structures installed in Île-de-France. If you live near an incinerator near your home, contact the local ARS branch for more information.

In Île-de-France, the ARS is continuing its investigation and the analyzes of the samples taken. The result of this study should be published in the coming weeks.
