A recent study revealed that walking for three minutes every half hour helps to reduce blood sugar, according to the results of a small trial conducted for the benefit of the British Diabetes Patients Association.
The study, which was conducted on 32 people with type 1 diabetes, included walking for a few minutes every half hour, which helped them control their blood sugar level.
Diabetes British says “light, short-term activities” can offer easy and inexpensive changes to help people with diabetes.
There are more than 40,000 people with type 1 diabetes in the UK.
When any body has diabetes, the body stops producing insulin, which leads to high blood sugar and the need to get some insulin through injections.
“I walk during Talk to you on the phone“
Elizabeth Robertson, director of research at Diabetes British Society, which funded the study, says that for people with type 1 diabetes, going out and walking day following day improves their health.
Robertson added: “It is incredibly encouraging, and what the study found makes it simple and practical, such as having your phone conversations while you are walking, or setting a phone alarm to remind you to walk a little every half hour, and avoid sitting for long periods, which helps to adjust the level of stress.” blood sugar.”
Within a short period of time, diabetes can lead to further complications, including kidney failure, eye problems, and heart attacks.
Lead researcher at the University of Sunderland, Dr Matthew Campbell, said he was surprised by what the study revealed, especially with a little walking.
He added that for some people with type 1 diabetes, short periods of exercise can become necessary as a first step towards more physical activity, and for others it can be an example of the steps that must be taken to control the level of sugar in the blood.
In the early stages of the study, involving 32 adults with type 1 diabetes, the participants spent two periods of 7 hours sitting.
In one of the two periods, they remained seated, and in the other they walked three minutes a little every half hour, and their blood sugar level was monitored for 48 hours continuously, while they ate the same type of food and the same quantities during the seven hours while maintaining the same percentage of insulin in their bodies.
And walking in this way reduced the level of sugar in the blood, to 6.9 mmol, while the usual level was 8.2 mmol.
The authors of the study hope to conduct a larger and more comprehensive study on the same subject.
“It’s simple. Walking for short periods of time during the day helps most people control their blood sugar,” says Dr. Campbell.
Diabetes mellitus, a chronic disease, makes the blood sugar level very high, and there are two types of it.
- Type 1: The immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells.
- The second type is when the body stops producing an adequate amount of insulin, or the cells responsible for receiving insulin in the body stop responding to it.
The second type of diabetes is the most common.
