King of the worldwide box office right now, Super Mario Bros. the Movie opens the door to success for cinematic adaptations of the Nintendo universe. What to expect from such projects according to Shigeru Miyamoto, who compares Nintendo to a talent agency.
“Nintendo is like a talent agency”
Nintendo is in the heart of the news at the end of April. There is of course the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which arrives on May 12th exclusively on NIntendo Switch which is the most anticipated game of the year. But there is also Super Mario Bros. The Movies available in theaters around the world (with the exception of Japan for example, for which it is still planned) which is a hit. Animated by the studio behind Me, Despicable Methe feature film does better than disney and stands out as one of the best video game adaptations of all time. What can serve as foundations for other films to come? Yes if Shigeru Miyamoto is to be believed. Today creative director at Nintendo, he is the brain behind the Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong and Pikmin sagas. In an interview with the economic newspaper Nikkei (translated by MyNintendoNews), he declares “that there is no doubtregarding other upcoming Nintendo movies:
Nintendo is like a talent agency (…) There are many possibilities, such as using characters that would be suitable for films or very well-known characters.
Voluntarily vague words so as not to spill the beans too early. Nintendo is often credited with the most understated communication: until it’s over, it’s not over.
“Nothing to announce in the near future”
Unfortunately, we should not expect any announcement in the coming weeks. During his press tour organized on the occasion of the release of Super Mario Bros. The MoviesShigeru Miyamoto talks regarding the following things during an interview with our fellow GameInformer :
You probably know that we now have Nintendo Pictures as a group. When we make games, it’s a form of content. And when we create cartoons, that’s another form of content. And we want to continue to expand the amount of content we can produce. As for announcing or sharing anything, I try to wait until there is something really good and enjoyable. So there’s probably nothing to announce in the near future, so I’m asking you to focus on that movie for now. (Laughs)
In any case, it cannot be excluded that other films concerning Nintendo’s flagship characters are in the pipeline. Many rumors provide grist for the mill. A few months ago, the media GiantFreakinRobot had raised that a special film dedicated to Donkey Kong (still with Seth Rogen) would highlight the universe of the monkey by dissociating itself well from that of Mario. It’s not the ideas that are lacking since even the casting of the film seems to be curious regarding the cinematographic future of Nintendo: Jack Black, interpreter of Bowser in Super Mario Bros. The Moviesevokes that other villains can steal the show from the King of Koopas. This is without counting on the mention, quickly erased, seen on LinkedIn regarding the development of a film centered on the character … of Luigi.
