Last Friday, the writer and essayist Frédéric Beigbeder went to a bookstore in Bordeaux (Gironde), on the occasion of the release of his latest book “Confessions of a slightly overwhelmed heterosexual”. But her arrival was disrupted by dozens of feminist activists.
The day before, slogans targeting the author were stuck on the front of the establishment that hosted him. Passers-by might thus read “175 pages of misogynistic handjob” or even “Nobody wants to suck you Beigbeder”. And the next day, activists intervened during his conference and chanted “Victim, we believe you; rapist, we see you”, before being evacuated by security agents.
Saturday evening, on the BFMTV set, Frédéric Beigbeder spoke regarding the sequence that took place during the signing session. “These are people who want to prevent a meeting in a bookstore, who ransack a bookstore, in France, in 2023, and who call for censorship”, he declared, specifying that there were “three buses of font for [le] protect”.
And to add: “I love messing around on television. But there, I don’t want to joke at all. They call me a rapist, therefore a criminal, and I have nothing to do with that” .
“I am a writer. I write things that can provoke, which are perhaps sometimes outrageous things, because I think that a book is not like life, it is something else, a a bit strange place, a space of freedom”, concluded the author.
