After 12 hours of having arrived in the country, Alejandro Toledo Manrique finally entered the DIROES (Directorate of Special Operations of the National Police) prison, to serve an 18-month preventive prison, for the Interoceánica Sur case.

After his arrival at the Jorge Chávez airport, coming from the United States, at 7 am, he was handed over to the Peruvian judicial authorities. After review by a forensic doctor, he went to the identity control hearing. Later he was taken to the Los Cibeles barracks, from where he was transferred to the prison in a helicopter.

His defense lawyer, Roberto Su, claimed the excessive waiting time that the procedures took. He said that his defendant went more than 12 hours without eating food and that his health might fail, since he is a person over 70 years of age.

Presidents’ prison will house Alejandro Toledo

Thus, from tonight, former president Alejandro Toledo will share a place of confinement with fellow former presidents Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo, although they do not have direct contact with each other. The premises located in Barbadillo were specially conditioned to house high dignitaries, as is the case of the three mentioned.

Former President Ollanta Humala also served pretrial detention at this same location. And that would have been the fate of Alan García if he had not taken his own life. And of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, if they had not given him house arrest in consideration of his age.
