Axios said Twitter users are resisting Elon Musk’s “pay-for-verification” policy, with many journalists and celebrities choosing to cancel their subscriptions rather than keep the blue tick, to avoid embarrassment.
The report indicated that the blue mark was a badge of honor, while it has now become an indication of desperation, as anyone can buy it.
The website concluded that the policies of paying for online documentation in general had turned this feature from “a badge of honor into a badge of shame”.
Last Thursday, Twitter began removing blue verification checks from accounts that do not pay the monthly fee for Twitter Blue.
Many prominent users of the platform have lost the authentication tags that helped them authenticate their identity and distinguish them from scammers.
According to Axios, the Twitter CEO later announced that he was personally pushing for high-profile users to keep their authentication tags, even when they indicated they did not want to keep the tag under the new subscription system.
Over the weekend, the blue verification marks appeared to be back on the Twitter profiles of several accounts with more than a million followers.
The site notes that the new system might create more chaos and confusion for ordinary users who rely on the authentication mark to find out if the accounts of prominent personalities are real or fake.
The cost of maintaining tags ranges from $8 per month for individual users, and a starting price of $1,000 per month for an enterprise account verification, in addition to $50 per month for each account affiliated with an entity or employee.
