A video is circulating on social networks in which you can see how a robot suddenly collapsed to the ground following a long work day stacking boxes.
This is Digit, a prototype bipedal robot manufactured by the American company Agility Robotics to perform tasks in work environments that have been designed for people. His box-picking and stacking skills were put to the test at the ProMat 2023 supply trade show, which took place last March in the city of Chicago.
Several users joked that the robot got tired and, unhappy with the manual work, decided to deactivate it completely. However, its creators explained that “with a 99% success rate over regarding 20 hours of live demos, Digit suffered a couple of crashes on ProMat”, so the robot’s blackout was not caused by overwork.
For her part, the vice president of communications for Agility Robotics, Liz Clinkenbeard, quoted by AP on Wednesday, clarified that they wanted to “show that Digit fell a couple of times, that it is a normal part of any new technology and that it is not a big deal. ». Likewise, she specified that the robot demonstrated its capabilities for four days in ProMat, including two full days following the fall that the viralized video shows.
The executive explained that when Digit crashes, it is commonly due to a ‘software’ error or a minimal error in its sensor. “Sometimes it may need a repair; rarely something that takes more than 15 to 20 minutes,” she said.
“We want to be careful not to overly humanize a machine or give it an intention,” Clinkenbeard reiterated, noting that the robot bears some resemblance to a person, but “is actually a computer that can do physical work and follows a program.”
