Whiskey, a 78.2% increase in imports compared to last year…”the largest ever”

Whiskey imports surged in the first quarter of this year. It is the largest ever for the same quarter, and the second largest for the entire quarter.

According to the trade statistics of the Korea Customs Service on the 24th, imports of whiskeys such as scotch, bourbon, and rye in the first quarter of this year reached 8,443 tons, a 78.2% increase compared to the same period last year. This is the highest in the first quarter since 2000, when related statistics are available.

Even on a quarterly basis, it is the second-highest record following the fourth quarter of last year (8625 tons).

Whiskey imports have recently been on the rise. It increased from 4738 tons in the first quarter of last year to 6451 tons in the second quarter, 7224 tons in the third quarter, and 8625 tons in the fourth quarter, and also exceeded the 8,000 tons mark in the first quarter of this year.

The amount of whiskey imported in the first quarter of this year was $64.77 million, up 24.0% from the same period last year, and the increase was much smaller than the import volume (78.2%).

The price per ton of imported whiskey was around 11,000 dollars in the first and second quarters of last year. It then fell to $9,600 in the third quarter, $8,500 in the fourth quarter, and $7,700 in the first quarter of this year.

For the time being, whiskey popularity is expected to continue. Recently, not only whiskey manufacturers and importers, but also distributors such as hypermarkets and convenience stores are expanding their whiskey product range or actively holding discounts and promotional events.
