Rapper Ryo Bu Karma has increased his appearances in media such as TV programs and commercials. “Charisma” has won many titles in freestyle battles, but his fearless remarks and attitude have not changed at all in variety shows, and his style is well received by viewers.

Even so, why did he break out outside of the hip-hop scene? We interviewed Lu Bu himself right following his appearance at the fashion show “Kobe Collection” on April 15th.

■ “It’s easy because you don’t have to create a special character”

──Mr. Ryo Bu, you have been on many stages as a rapper, but to think that you would be walking on the runway of a fashion show…

I had no idea. However, today’s fashion show is also the same, and TV is basically plain clothes. I think I have an image of myself, including my hairstyle and clothes, so I don’t have to wear anything special, so it’s easy and easy.

──Isn’t there a big change in your work, such as the number of appearances on TV programs has increased dramatically?

It’s true that my work outside of rapping has increased. However, from the beginning of the variety show, I knew that what was required of me wasn’t “I have to say something funny” like a professional comedian.

Since they knew me from the beginning, they should have given me an offer, so I thought it would be fine if I showed the usual feeling. I don’t have to create a character specifically for variety shows, so that’s also easy.

──Isn’t the turning point in your appearance in the August 15, 2022 broadcast of “Aiseki Shokudo” (ABC TV), “Locator Discovery! Blue Difference SP 2022”?

I agree. The impromptu rap I did during the location at that time was really difficult. I had never experienced improvisation in silence at a coffee shop. But I think it was interesting that I mightn’t do it properly there. Because of that, it’s no longer necessary to be able to do well on variety shows.

──The more you appear on TV like that, the more people say things like “You’re a rapper, but you only appear on TV” in freestyle battles. However, if it sells so well, even if it hits such a verse, it feels too late.

Well, it’s lonely. I’m sure you don’t have anything else to say to me. Actually, that’s not the only thing we do, we basically do live performances and also appear in battles. Appearing on TV just widens the scope of my work, so I don’t think anything of it when people say things like, “I’m a rapper, but I’m only on TV.”

■ “It’s my turn, and I feel like I’m hooked.”

──What do you think are the factors behind your popularity in various fields such as TV programs and fashion shows?

It’s not like I changed something in myself to be like this, it’s just a matter of timing. For example, someone who used to appear on TV has disappeared. Also, Creepy Nuts was more popular than I was, and I think there was a trend on TV that said, “It would be interesting if we used hip-hop people.”

──There was that atmosphere around “Freestyle Dungeon” (TV Asahi).

That’s right, wasn’t there? So rappers started appearing on TV. But when I tried to use it, I ended up getting arrested.

──It’s a common story (laughs).

If that happens, there will be holes. It was my turn to pick another rapper. Well, for now, isn’t that a good thing?

From April, Ryofu Karma, Aiseki Start Yamazoe, and A Masso Kano’s “Quiz with no correct answer” (TV Tokyo) will be regular.

──In the past, you said in a livestream that many R-shitei-san appeared on TV, etc., saying, “It seems difficult, but I envy you.”

I just thought it was “interesting”. Usually, the TV I watch is R-rated, and I meet with entertainers.

── On the other hand, you also said, “I don’t need to work that much.” Isn’t that a word that applies to Mr. Lu Bu’s current busyness?

You have completely returned to yourself. I’m doing it as an individual (without attaching an entertainment agency), but the amount of work I receive there is the maximum. I’m at my physical limit right now. But I choose my own work, so I can make adjustments in that respect.

I only do work that I am satisfied with. The points to choose are “interesting”, “hip-hop”, “good money”, and “erotic”. Erotic is especially important, so I want to do that kind of work.
