This is one of the big news at the start of the day on Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Even before the race was televised, when the peloton was only regarding to taste the difficulties of the day, Tadej Pogacar fell heavily 176 kilometers from the finish. Staying on the ground, the Slovenian finally gave up a few minutes later, taking with him his ambitions of a hat-trick over the Ardennes.
Inevitably, the abandonment of the great favorite of the day caused a lot of talk. What really happened? What pushed Pogacar to the ground? Audrey Degrange tried to find out more from Mauro Gianetti, sports director of Pogacar’s UAE training: “It was downhill. The peloton was driving at high speed. Mikkel Honoré rolled into a hole in the road, both of its wheels exploded at the same time. That’s what caused the fall. Tadej was right behind, he didn’t have time to brake, he fell and went a few meters down the road. He shredded his side well. He tried to start once more but following a hundred meters he realized that his hand was hurting him too much and he stopped.”
In the end, the verdict is very heavy. Pogacar is hit in the left wrist. Gianetti takes stock of the damage: “He suffers from a multiple fracture to the scaphoid of the left hand in addition to a fracture to the moon. He is in Genk hospital. He is having surgery. I got a call from our doctor who brought him there. We knew there was a hand doctor there. We are waiting for the end of the operation to find out more.”
