The medical area has been transformed with the arrival of women a few years ago, noted for their leadership, empathy with their patients and practicing their profession with love, demonstrating that medicine was not a field only for men.
With more than 20 years of experience, in the area of medicine, Dr. Marisel Bosquesinfectologist, specialist in the treatment of people with HIV and president of HIV Treatershas built a great legacy as a woman in science and health in Puerto Rico.
Your role in medicine
Dr. Bosques has extensive practice in internal medicine and infectious diseases, a professional career with great challenges, both at work and the fact of being a woman, achieving great results in this field.
“I think the empowerment of women in the medical field is a result of the resilience and hard work that many of us women do within this field, which can be a very hostile environment for women at times, but we have many that with that hard work we can move on because we have a lot to contribute,” said the infectologist.
In the same way, Dr. Bosques expressed the privilege of being a woman and working in the field of health, for so many years, “women have been relegated to a secondary role in the productive life of society and I have had the good fortune to prove otherwise, I also feel useful working on my island and I feel enormous satisfaction because every day I contribute to the health of Puerto Ricans”
The importance in your profession
However, practicing a subspecialty such as infectious diseases is quite a difficult challenge since infectious diseases are an important cause of death, “we are experiencing it at the moment, for my part, I am proud because as an infectious disease specialist I am collaborating daily to eventually put end to the epidemic HIV“added the specialist.
In turn, in her facet as president of the Association of HIV Treating Physicians, Dr. Bosques, together with her team, contributes greatly to different health professionals receiving continuing education. “Our field is very dynamic and a big part of the challenge is to keep up to date, also in our relationship with patients, we offer support and intervene in favor of their causes when there is a situation that affects them,” she added.
The role of women in HIV Treaters
Currently, things are very different from what might be seen in the world in general a few years ago, now more women are seen practicing as doctors, as well as in important leadership ranks.
For this reason, Dr. Bosques pointed out the importance of women in HIV Treaters“I replaced a woman in the Association of HIV Treating Physicians and before her there was another woman presiding over the association. Those are very notable and very important achievements, however, the challenges continue, because that notion prevails that women have to work much harder.”
On the other hand, he affirmed that women still have to demonstrate extraordinary skills to prove that gender equality can exist, adding that much remains to be done to avoid these disparities.
In the same way, with the advances in treatments once morest HIV the disease has become a manageable chronic condition, today people diagnosed with the virus have a life expectancy very similar to the general population.
For these reasons, Dr. Bosques explains that the most prevalent conditions in patients with HIVis heart disease and cancer, just like women who do not live with the virus, the focus in management is towards primary health and prevention.
Therefore, the specialist highlights the importance of mental health, “this can be a bit more complicated and has its challenges, but it is vital to maintain adherence to treatment of HIVbecause we know that the people who keep the HIV controlled and undetectable do not transmit, generating a positive impact on public health,” he added.
Your message as a woman
“My belief is that God made men and women equal in dignity, we women have demonstrated with tenacity and a positive attitude, having a place in society, we must continue with that momentum walking forward, with love and with our heads held high. We must not do great acts, but day by day renew our conviction to do our bit, leaving the traces that mark our role in humanity”, concluded Dr. Bosques.
