Users of weekly injections for type 2 diabetes control and weight loss, such as Ozempic and Wegovy – both with semaglutide as an active ingredient – are using social networks to share personal experiences with the drugs.

On TikTok, there are reports of a series of unpleasant physical and psychological side effects, such as sagging skin, loss of desire to eat foods that were previously pleasurable, weight gain following interrupting treatment and even bizarre dreams with celebrities – the #OzempicDreams.

face of ozempic

Rapid weight loss following starting treatment has caused the so-called “Ozempic face” or “Ozempic body” in some people, characterized by sagging skin.

This occurs because the skin does not have enough time to adapt to the new body size and regions such as the face, arms, belly and buttocks can gain a more flaccid appearance.

Weird dreams

American Chery McLemore told the Wall Street Journal that since February, when she started using Ozempic for weight loss, she has had recurring dreams regarding actor Matthew McConaughey. In them, the two go to cattle auctions together and, following a pleasant conversation, the actor leaves riding a llama.

Among the reports there is also that of a person who claims to have been rescued by Oprah Winfrey in a kart; a museum robbery with Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck and a night shopping for kitchen furniture with Clint Eastwood.

While the cause is not clear, experts told the paper that it might be attributed to the medication’s increased energy expenditure or the possibility that the medication makes it easier for people to remember their dreams.

muscle loss

In addition to fat, some people are seeing rapid muscle loss. “What we see is usually more muscle loss than fat loss. At least 50% of our patients have muscle wasting,” said endocrinologist Florence Comite, to the Daily Mail.

The doctor explains that when people follow a calorie-restricted diet, the body is more likely to consume muscle first than fat, because it is more expensive to maintain.

rebound effect

Weight gain following stopping treatment is expected. A representative of pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk informed, in March, that patients who discontinue the use of medication usually regain weight and regain their original weight in five years.

A previous study showed that people regained two-thirds of their original weight within just one year of stopping treatment.

healthier eating

There are also reports of people who changed their eating habits following starting treatment. Foods that aroused your desire, such as sweets, fried foods and coffee, lost their appeal. On the other hand, healthy foods have become more appetizing. One patient reported that she lost her desire for fried chicken and coffee and suddenly had a craving for kale salad.

Clinical studies testing semaglutide, particularly at the highest dose, showed that volunteers tended to have less cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods.

Novo Nordisk’s medical manager, Carlos Eduardo Travassos, told the metropolises that semaglutide has a broad effect on the human body and the brain is an important area in this process. The active principle would act on the hedonic appetite, the one that makes us eat simply for pleasure and not out of necessity.

“This effect was identified in the study. Some participants were less likely to need these foods. The cause is probably related to semaglutide’s own mechanism of action,” he said.

no desire to drink

Recently, the internet circulated the report of a man who said he lost the desire to consume alcoholic beverages following starting weight loss treatment. “Before the medication, I mightn’t drink just one bottle of beer. I took eight, ten, almost religiously”, said the North American Erin Bradley McAleer, 43 years old, to Insider magazine.

The relationship between the use of semaglutide and the loss of interest in alcoholic beverages has not yet been studied in depth by the manufacturer Novo Nordisk and there is no data to prove the relationship. According to Travassos, the side effect can be explained by a mechanism similar to what happens with craving food.

“This same process might lead to a decrease in the desire to consume alcohol. Some studies with animals show that there was a reduction in ethanol consumption, but there is no research that proves this relationship with humans”, he ponders.
