There is no doubt: the soap opera I am Betty the Ugly one –by Colombian librettist Fernando Gaitán– is the most important audiovisual production in recent Colombian history. And that can be measured by the impact that the story of the romance between Betty and Don Armando has had on audiences in different countries, including some that are not Spanish-speaking.

There have been many foreign artists who at some point have declared their admiration for the soap opera aired for the first time between 1999 and 2001.

In an interview on the show The Jess Cagle Show de SiriusXM, the actress Elizabeth Olsen –the younger sister of the Olsen twins and who rose to fame for her role as Scarlet Witch in the Marvel franchise– has confessed that I am Betty, the ugly one was one of the favorite programs in childhood, even before the broadcast of the gringa version.

“My friends and I would watch Ugly Betty on TV and pretend to translate it, so we created a whole Ugly Betty musical in Spanish class,” the 34-year-old actress said with a laugh.

So far, adaptations of the story written by Gaitán have been made in the United States, Germany, Israel, Mexico, India, the Netherlands, and Russia, among others. One of the most curious versions was Veto al feo, made in Ecuador.
