travel chaos: Get through security faster with this airport service
Numerous airports drastically reduce the waiting time with appointments for the security check that can be booked free of charge. Zurich lacks the staff for this.
That’s what it’s regarding
-
This summer, too, there are likely to be long waiting times at airports.
-
Now the airports are gearing up.
-
Time slots for the security check should help.
The chaos at the airports with delays and canceled flights is also looming this summer. Just at Easter there were hours of waiting in front of the security checks once more.
Last year, during the peak season, only 40 percent of flights arrived on time. The queues at the airports extended to the streets. Stephan Widrig, head of Zurich Airport, recently became clear when he said: “It would be naïve to think that this year will be much smoother than last year.”
Many airports are now trying to find a remedy to better organize the processes despite the lack of staff. At BER Airport in Berlin, for example, there are appointments for the security check that can be booked in advance free of charge.
Waiting time reduced to five to ten minutes
Guests are assigned a time slot via email. As with the fast lanes for the better classes, the guests have a separate access to the corresponding control lane and thus avoid long waits, as the “Welt” writes.
This shortened the waiting time to five to ten minutes. Berlin only increased the number of daily time slots from 4,000 to 6,000 in March. Cologne/Bonn Airport also offers the option. Amsterdam and Frankfurt are testing them, Munich completed the test and is now considering integration.
In Great Britain, the service is already established almost everywhere, only at the largest airport London Heathrow it currently only works for passengers with higher fare classes or frequent flyer status. In addition, the service is not free on the island, but costs a fee of up to nine francs.
Only the better classes benefit in Zurich
These slot bookings are not planned at Zurich Airport, at least not for the moment, as spokeswoman Jasmin Bodmer-Breu says to 20 minutes. Only business, first and various frequent flyer categories benefit from a priority lane in Zurich.
The cantonal police in Zurich, which is responsible for the security check, is not always able to provide the required staff quota. That’s why there can be longer waiting times at the security checkpoint during rush hours than you’re used to in Zurich,” says Bodmer-Breu. The airport is working with the canton police to find solutions.
Tips from Zurich Airport for shorter waiting times:
-
Be at the airport two to three hours before departure.
-
Do everything online in advance and find out in advance what is allowed in hand luggage and normal luggage.
-
Travel with little hand luggage.
-
Be well prepared at the security checkpoint before it is your turn: put the permitted liquids in a transparent, resealable plastic bag in advance and take electronic devices out of your hand luggage.
