3 years following the Covid crisis, some sectors are unable to retain their teams. In the hotel, catering, tourism or even retail trade, employees only stay in their jobs for 6 months to 1 year on average, according to a study by Indeed. These professions sometimes suffer from a negative image that pushes employees to change sectors, in particular with remuneration that is often close to the minimum wage and sometimes difficult working hours. So employees are more quickly tempted to leave these sectors.

A real headache

Cédrine, however, worked for 16 years on the shelves in a large retail chain. The Covid was a trigger: she converted to a nursery assistant, tired of her old work rhythm. “The problem with mass distribution is that we don’t have a lot of holidays, we don’t spend a lot of time with our families because of somewhat complicated schedules. I spent a lot more time at work than at home”, she underlines at the microphone of Europe 1.

Faced with this lack of love for employees and rapid departures, companies in the hotel and catering industry or even trade are facing a real headache. “It poses a problem on the side of recruiters for productivity, to have stability on the HR side. There is progress to be made on the quality of management, the way we manage teams and people”, admits Alexandre Judes , an economist at Indeed. Other solutions might be considered to retain teams, such as the 4-day week.
