SANTO DOMINGO.- The government of the Dominican Republic has decided to take concrete steps to more effectively detect firearms that are illegally in the hands of the civilian population.

Its first initiative is aimed at training the agents of various institutions that are in charge of preventing this illegal practice, which has traditionally been the source of robberies, murders and other criminal acts.

In this regard, the Ministry of the Interior and Police, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna, the Embassy and Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic in Austria and the Program of German Cooperation offered a course on detection of illicit firearms trafficking and a workshop on data collection and analysis.

The activity, which lasted four days, took place in a hotel in this city, with the participation of 33 representatives of 13 other public institutions in the Dominican Republic to provide them with tools and methods to improve their assessment capacity, risk management and threats.

In the closing ceremony, the Minister of the Interior and Police, Jesús Vásquez Martínez, stressed that the government, through various instances, has intensified its efforts to control and regulate the illegal trafficking of firearms, strictly adhering to the regulations international and laws.

“We hope that international organizations will reciprocate with the Dominican Republic and make a greater effort to prevent illegal firearms from reaching the country and being used by criminals, affecting citizen security in the Dominican Republic,” he said.

He stressed that the Government faces the problem globally to guarantee protection to citizens.

Meanwhile, Roberto Rodríguez Codesal, UNODC Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice officer, stressed that the course demonstrates the commitment of the Dominican Republic to end the great problem of illicit arms trafficking from fire.

Another of the objectives of the course was to improve the capacities of criminal justice institutions and integrated border management services to coordinate and collaborate more effectively in the detection and prevention of illicit arms trafficking. This is because it is a transnational problem that involves multiple agencies and institutions, not only internationally but also nationally.

The event revealed that one of the main challenges in efforts to counter illicit firearms trafficking is the lack of cooperation and coordination between law enforcement agencies and border management services.
