The elements of the police of the Tanger Med Port District thwarted, on Saturday, in coordination with the Customs services, an attempt to international traffic of 5 tons and 438 kg of chira which were on board a transport truck international freight.
According to preliminary data from the investigation, joint border control operations carried out by National Security and Customs elements revealed that the truck driver was trying to use falsified export documents when he was preparing to go to Spain, said a statement from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).
This attempt required the vehicle to be subjected to a thorough search using the dogs of the canine brigade, specifies the DGSN, adding that this operation revealed that large quantities of chira were concealed in cavities specially fitted out in the trailer and the truck frame.
The unloading operation of this cargo led to the seizure of 5 tonnes and 438 kg of chira, in the form of slabs prepared for international traffic, while searches and investigations led to the arrest of the truck driver, an elderly Moroccan 45 years old, specifies the same source.
The accused was placed in police custody for the purposes of the investigation entrusted to the judicial police brigade of the Tangier Med port under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, in order to determine all the possible ramifications of this criminal activity on the nationally and internationally, the statement concludes.
