The mother and sister of Sourour Abouda, who died in a police cell last January, deplore the little information they receive from the Brussels public prosecutor’s office regarding the investigation into the death of their loved one in unclear circumstances.
Their lawyers, Me Selma Benkhelifa and Me Maxime Nardone, as well as the lawyer for the Human Rights League, Me Alexis Deswaef, say they do not understand why the prosecution does not appoint an investigating judge to conduct the investigation independently. According to them, it is urgent to shed light on this case which raises many questions, following the death of two other people in the same cells.
Causes and circumstances of death still unknown
Sourour Abouda, a 46-year-old woman, employed in the voluntary sector, was arrested on January 12 shortly before 6 a.m., rue Américaine in Ixelles.
According to the minutes which had been disclosed to RTBF by the mayor of Ixelles, a man contacted the police because a woman, who will be identified as Sourour Abouda, making incoherent remarks, had entered his car and didn’t want to get out.
The 40-year-old was then administratively arrested and taken to the RAC cell complex, the administrative center of the federal police, rue Royale in Brussels. She was found dead there following more than an hour without supervision.
Four days following the events, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office declared that the first findings ruled out the intervention of a third party in the death.
Today, Sourour’s family implores the Brussels public prosecutor’s office to appoint an investigating judge to shed light on the circumstances of his death.
The prosecution is currently conducting a simple judicial investigation.
