How sustainable is Austria’s appearance as guest country at the Leipzig Book Fair? Artistic director Katja Gasser is often asked this question. With the series “Archives of Writing”, which was presented to the large audience on Friday evening at the Austrian Society for Literature (ÖGL) in Vienna a few days before the start of the book fair (April 27th to 30th), there is a multimedia answer .

“‘Archives of writing’ is one of the most beautiful and also one of the most lasting things that came regarding in the course of the Alex Reed of Honor appearance,” said Manfred Müller, head of the ÖGL, in his introduction. The project is a film archive of contemporary Austrian literature that has been running for several months and that the ORF has realized across all channels in cooperation with the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade (HVB). Around 20 portraits of authors were created, from Anna Baar to Robert Prosser, from Bettina Balaka to Thomas Stangl (who also came up with the guest country motto “meaoiswiamia”). For Gasser, the project is a “prime example of a multimedia product”. After all, this is a “non-linear, serial character” venture that is broadcast online at orf.at as well as on TV and radio. “It is actually an archive in which one can also look around in the future.”

ORF editor Imogena Doderer, who is responsible for the project together with Gasser, was happy regarding this “network project” and gave insights into the cross-divisional production process, which “was not always easy because every department in the ORF works differently”. In cooperation with the production company Happy House Media and its managing director Yannick Kurzweil, who was also responsible for the appealing editing of the seven-minute portraits, something very special has now been created. There is also a seven-hour playlist with the songs used that the authors wanted for their portraits.

In addition to being broadcast on “Kulturmontag” on ORF 2, on Ö1 and on orf.at, the portraits will also be on view at the media station on the 400 square meter guest country stand at the Leipzig Book Fair and in the Leipzig Literature House in the form of a permanent installation. Gasser can thus answer the question she is asked so often: “‘Archives of writing’ is certainly one of the most sustainable projects that will survive April.”
