Our colleagues from The standard reveal in an article that the Albert Heijn chain of stores recruits teenagers aged 13 and 14 for small jobs. The brand does not hide it and even communicates regarding this practice on its website. “Did you know that you can come and work with us from the age of 13?“, can we read.

You have to be of legal age to be able to run a cash register. These teenagers can nevertheless work for the store by filling the shelves for example. For a salary of 5.25 euros per hour according to the store’s salary simulator.

Albert Heijn says he has been recruiting 13 and 14 year olds for years now, either through published advertisements or directly in their stores.

In the Netherlands, the law authorizes companies to recruit children under certain conditions. “Thirteen years old is very young… Employing children for commercial activities in the regular labor market is child labor, which is prohibited not only in our country, but also under international law, before the age 15 years old, explains Frank Hendrickx, professor of labor law at KU Leuven with The standard.

According to the professor, with us it is almost impossible for children of these ages to be recruited. The PTB and the CSC denounce such practices. “The PTB examined the model that Albert Heijn, the parent company of Delhaize in Belgium, wants to impose. In summary: a few permanent contracts completed by often very young jobistes: 3.94 euros per hour from the age of 13! It’s not the future we want”, explains Raoul Hedebouw on Twitter.
