“The Tiger Mosquito Invasion: How to Limit its Spread and Protect Yourself”

2023-04-21 18:29:00

The tiger mosquito is now declared established and active in 71% of the territory.

The colonies of the tiger mosquito continue to gain ground, the insect is now permanently installed on 71% of the territory while four new departments have gone from orange to red vigilance: Meurthe-et-Moselle, Loir-et-Cher , Loiret and Val-d’Oise. Three new departments have gone into orange vigilance: Ille-et-Vilaine, Morbihan and Finistère.

The Vigilance-Mosquitoes website recalls that “in the vast majority of cases, the departments in orange go into red vigilance in the years that follow”. The insect gradually colonized the departments until it was established and active in 68 of them (the departments in red):

Here are the 68 departments where the tiger mosquito is declared as implanted and active in April 2023.

The tiger mosquito is particularly harmful because it is a potential vector of serious diseases such as dengue fever and chikungunya, and to a lesser extent the Zika virus. They “experience regular epidemic episodes in tourist areas (and in particular in our overseas departments) very popular with French and European travelers, who therefore represent as many risk factors once returned to France”.

How to limit its spread?

The insect, also called Aedes Albopictus, measures only a few millimeters. Seen up close, it is distinguished by its black color with white stripes on its legs and abdomen, hence its nickname of the tiger mosquito. “It has a fairly slow flight and it is easy to crush in flight”, indicates the site Vigilance-mosquitoes.

“Accustomed from its Asian origin to being born in small lodgings (plants retaining water), it was able to easily colonize all kinds of accidental breeding places offered to it by the urban and peri-urban environment (cups under flower pots, watering cans, old tires, clogged gutters, etc…)”.

To limit the establishment of the tiger mosquito close to home, here are the main recommendations of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety:

  • regularly empty or remove the cups under the flower pots, vases, etc. or fill them with sand in order to retain the humidity without there being any stagnant water;
  • store, sheltered from the rain, buckets, gardening equipment, toys or miscellaneous containers;
  • cover the water collection containers with a mosquito net or fabric;
  • clean the gutters to facilitate the proper flow of water.

To protect yourself from bites, it is advisable to wear long, loose and light-colored clothing, especially at dawn and dusk.
