A Taiwan’s official delegation will travel to Chile and Peru at the end of April to gather support for the island’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP, also known as TPP-11), The island’s media reported today.
The Taiwanese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roy Lee, advanced in a parliamentary commission that Taipei is redoubling its efforts to join the bloc ahead of the meeting that its members will hold next July, in which new additions might be considered, the official agency CNA reports. .
Taiwan submitted its formal application to join the TPP in September 2021, although for the moment the group has not given the green light to start negotiations.
Lee explained that the Taiwanese government has encountered “some difficulties” in accessing detailed information on the process that the TPP member countries will follow to analyze the island’s request.
According to the diplomat, Japan and Canada support Taipei’s request, while Australia maintains that the Treaty is open to all economies that meet its high standards.
However, There is little information regarding the position of Peru and Chile regarding the incorporation of Taiwan and that is the reason why the Government of the island will send a delegation to present its arguments and request the support of Santiago and Lima.Lee added.
The CPTPP, sealed in 2018, includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Initially it had the United States, but this country abandoned the project in 2017 by decision of former President Donald Trump, which is why it is also known as TPP-11.
Along with Taiwan, China and Uruguay have also started the accession process to the Trans-Pacific Agreement, which is one of the largest free trade agreements in the world and covers 15% of world GDP.
