Vienna (OTS/IGGÖ) On Thursday evening, April 20, 2023, the Islamic month of fasting Ramadan ends and the three-day festival (Eid-ul-Fitr) begins, as the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) announced in its announcement.

The Muslim communities in the country have celebrated numerous traditions of the month of fasting over the past four weeks. An essential part of this is the so-called Iftar meal in the evening, which is traditionally celebrated in the mosques. In recent years, Islamic institutions have experienced increased anchoring in society as a whole due to their increased opening, which no longer only shares this tradition with their members, but also with people of other cultures, religions and origins. Thus, throughout Ramadan, not only numerous intra-Muslim, but also interreligious meetings took place.

The largest interreligious iftar was that of the IGGÖ in the Palais Niederösterreich, which was attended by numerous representatives of the churches and religious communities as well as representatives from the fields of politics, administration, diplomacy, society and science. The IGGÖ also organized an interreligious iftar at the Afro-Asian Institute this year. In the federal states, however, in addition to the many religious and mosque communities, the Islamic religious communities and the youth organizations of the IGGÖ invited to break the fast together. In addition, IGGÖ President Ümit Vural and representatives of the religious community also accepted the invitations of political leaders, such as those of the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig and the Minister of Education Susanne Raab.

“The crises of recent years – health, economic, social – have shown how indispensable solidarity and respect are for maintaining peaceful coexistence. Personal encounters and the promotion of curiosity regarding other traditions and cultures are an enrichment for all of us. I would therefore like to thank all those who accepted our invitations this Ramadan and also supported the Muslims of Austria by organizing their own iftar meals showed appreciation,” said IGGÖ President Ümit Vural.

The aid organization KARIMA of the IGGÖ was able to carry out Ramadan campaigns on a larger scale for the first time this year, including handing out Iftar meals to refugees at the external borders of the EU, supporting the social market of SOS Children’s Villages or distributing gifts to refugee children in the Traiskirchen initial reception center .

The Islamic Faith Community wishes all Muslims in Austria a blessed, peaceful and happy holiday! Eid mubarak!
