MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced Thursday that the presidential plane has been sold to the Tajikistan government for regarding $92 million, following nearly five years of failed attempts to sell it.
López Obrador said on his Twitter account that the purchase contract for the aircraft, a Boeing 787, which was acquired by the government of Tajikistan, a Central Asian country with 10 million inhabitants, was concluded on Thursday.
The presidential plane was sold for 1,658 million pesos (regarding 92 million dollars), the president said.
“After a long time, this plane was sold,” López Obrador said from one of the seats of the luxurious aircraft when celebrating the operation. “We are like the nouveau riche who buy a yacht or a plane like this and are happy only the day they launch it and the day they sell it,” he added.
The ruler reported in a video, which he posted on his social network account, that the proceeds from the sale will be used to build two 80-bed hospitals in poor communities in the southern states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. “We already took off this earring, because it was hard for us to find a client.”
López Obrador, who prides himself on his austerity and is used to traveling on commercial flights, had promised since he took office in December 2018 to sell the aircraft as too luxurious an asset.
The device was purchased for 200 million dollars and was used by the previous president, Enrique Peña Nieto. The sale was made difficult because the plane was configured to carry only 80 people and has a presidential suite complete with a private bathroom.
