After almost 50 years the mystery regarding the Red Brigade member who managed to escape during the liberation of the wine entrepreneur might be solved Vittorio Vallarino Gancia , in the firefight with the carabinieri in front of the Spiotta farmhouse, in the province of Alessandria, in which the brigade member Mara Cagol, wife of Renato Curcio, and the pinned officer Giovani D’Alfonso and two other carabinieri were injured, one of which was lost an arm. The Turin prosecutor served a guarantee notice on 79-year-old Lauro Azzolini, at the time head of the Milanese column of the Red Brigades and whom he later dissociated from.

Obtained the legal benefits following a life sentence, he currently works for a cooperative of disabled people. Azzolini has already been acquitted of the charges for the shooting at the Spiotta farmhouse and a hearing will be held on May 9 before the investigating judge of the Turin court who will have to decide whether or not to reopen the investigation.

“My client – defender Davide Steccanella says – has nothing to fear from this investigation”. It was precisely the subalpine prosecutor’s office, in 2022, that opened a file following a complaint presented by the son of the soldier, Bruno D’Alfonso. Two months ago, Renato Curcio, one of the founders of the Red Brigades, who is now 81, was registered in the register of suspects.

When questioned in Rome, he denied any direct or indirect involvement in the Spiotta farmhouse affair and, indeed, asked the investigators to clarify the circumstances of Mara Cagol’s death, recalling that the woman was pierced by a bullet that had a horizontal trajectory under the left armpit, as if he had his arms raised in surrender.

No extradition from France for the ex Br, “Shame”

Initially Curcio had been summoned as an assisted witness – like at least a dozen former Red Brigade members before him – but then, a few days following the hearing, he had been formally investigated for complicity in the murder of the carabiniere D’Alfonso. The founder of the BR was not at the Spiotta farmhouse but according to the investigators he was a “top figure” of the BR and he organized and planned in detail the kidnapping of Vittorio Vallarino Gancia, son of the owner of the winery, which took place on 4 June 1975 and was freed the day following a shootout with the kidnappers.
