The Chilean President, Gabriel Boric, made a national chain this Thursday to present the national lithium strategy, where he highlighted the announcement of a state company, the exploitation and exploitation of more salt flats and the incentive to create value-added products.
The national chain began following 9:00 p.m., with Boric declaring that “our challenge is for our country to become the main lithium producer in the world.”
Subsequently, he reported 5 key points of this strategy:
1. The State will participate in the entire production cycle, creating a national lithium company, for which a project will be sent to Congress.
2. Virtuous public-private collaboration: exploration, exploitation and added value.
3. Use of new lithium exploitation technologies that minimize the impact on the salt flat ecosystems. A safety net will be created.
4. Everything will be done with the participation and involvement of the communities surrounding the mining operations. “The first milestone in this process will be a direct conversation between the Atacameño People’s Council and myself,” said the president.
5. “We will not only promote exploration and exploitation, we will also promote the production of value-added lithium products,” Boric said.
In the breakdown of the points, it stands out that President Boric commissioned Codelco to take command of the state participation in the exploitation of lithium, as long as a state company has not been created for that purpose.
The current copper company will even have to negotiate its entry into the Atacama salt flats, one of the salt flats in Chile that are exploited to obtain lithium.
