Check out five simple practices to have a more conscious and ecological relationship with your mobile devices
This Saturday (22) is celebrated International Earth Day, a date adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2009 to increase environmental awareness and disseminate sustainable practices in favor of the planet. Samsung, through initiatives such as Galaxy For The Planet, aims to create far-reaching actions to not only draw attention to the issue, but also transform the Earth into a healthier planet for the future.
Below, find out tips for a more responsible and conscious consumption of electronic devices.
Dispose of your items correctly and still win gifts!
When an electronic device no longer meets your needs, there are some ways to go, you can choose to pass it on to someone else, for example. Another option is to direct the device to recycling – and this goes for any smartphone, tablet, notebook, TV, washing machine or even accessories such as headphones, cables and adapters. All these items must be disposed of correctly, so that some components can be reused in the production chain, avoiding negative impacts on the environment.
Samsung relies on the Samsung Recicla initiative, a reverse logistics program so that people can dispose of electronic products¹ of all sizes free of charge, giving them the correct route. In all, there are around 350 collection points throughout Brazil for small and medium-sized electronics, in addition to scheduling the collection of large appliances of any brand. More details regarding the Samsung Recycle program are available on the Samsung website.
Choose sustainable brands
As part of the Galaxy For The Planet initiative, Samsung has been gradually increasing the use of recyclable materials across multiple Galaxy device lines.
In 2023, for example, the Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G model* doubled2 the use of recycled parts compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G*, going from six to 12 internal and external components. The Galaxy S23 5G lineup also includes a wider range of recycled materials, including pre-consumer recycled aluminum and glass, and post-consumer recycled plastics from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.3. It is the line that uses more recycled materials than any other Samsung Galaxy smartphone, and is also UL ECOLOGO® certified4which means that the product has been certified for reduced environmental impact.
Reuse what you get
In addition to the use of recyclable materials in several lines of Galaxy devices, Samsung has thought of an ecological and sustainable solution for product packaging. The Galaxy S23 5G smartphones, for example, come in redesigned packaging made with 100% recycled paper. But it’s not just that.
Another initiative is the reusable packaging of Samsung Smart TVs. Instead of simply discarding the material, you can use creativity to transform the box of one of these products into a magazine holder, object holder or even a house for your pet. Step by step comes in the packaging itself.
Avoid incorrect accumulations and waste
When purchasing a new electronic device, it is common to forget regarding the old device, either by storing it in a room in the house – following all, a stopped electronic device is also considered waste – or by improperly disposing of the product. The same goes for accessories, such as charging cables or plug adapters, which may no longer work and are taking up unnecessary space in your home or work environment.
Samsung’s latest devices adopt the Type-C standard, which universalizes product charging using a single cable. This way, you don’t need to have several different accessories on hand whenever you want to recharge your Galaxy smartphone, for example. On QLED and Neo QLED TVs, Samsung offers SolarCell control, which is charged by solar energy, ambient light and even spare radio frequency from Wi-Fi routers, reducing battery disposal.
Samsung still has Smart Exchange services5 and Eco Exchange6. The first allows you to use your old smartphone, tablet or smartwatch to get discounts on the purchase of a new Galaxy smartphone. That way, if you’re looking at a Samsung device that integrates the program and want to find out how much it’s worth when buying a new Galaxy, just use Smart Exchange. The Samsung Eco Exchange Program encourages the correct disposal of old products, making it possible to exchange equipment such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioning, TVs, monitors and dishwashers, of any brand and in any condition, for Samsung products at a discount . While upgrading your electronics to a more technological one, you contribute to a more sustainable planet by disposing of your old device in a correct way.
Think regarding today to see results tomorrow
Earth Day is on April 22nd, but it is essential to exercise sustainable practices every day to guarantee a better and healthier future for the next generations. Samsung, for example, has a new environmental strategy to combat climate change, including a commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the company by 2050. Samsung also plans to use 100% renewable energy by 2027, as well how to invest in and experiment with new technologies to help create more efficient products.
Furthermore, by 2030, Samsung Electronics plans to expand its electronic waste collection system from approximately 50 to approximately 180 countries. With this, the forecast is to collect 10 million tons of e-waste between 2009 and 2030, totaling 25 million tons by 2050.
