Nissan Formula E team looks to maximize potential at Berlin E-Prix

YOKOHAMA, Japan – The Nissan Formula E Team heads to Berlin this weekend for the 7th and 8th rounds of the 2022/2023 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with drivers Norman Nato and Sacha Fenestraz set to tackle the second double round of this ninth season.

Having hosted more E-Prix than any other, the 2,355km urban circuit at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin is a fixture on the Formula E calendar, having hosted many different circuits. Although it was recently used both ways in its double round, this year the riders will only run it counterclockwise.

With a Douglas DC-3 aircraft exposed inside Turn 6, this circuit is challenging due to the abrasive surface, which requires an even greater focus on tire and energy management.

Nissan and Norman Nato have already enjoyed success at this track, winning the 2020 and 2021 races respectively, while rookie Sacha Fenestraz will be racing for the first time in Berlin this weekend.

The qualifying round starts at 5:40 am (Brasília time) and the race starts at 10:03 am. Find out how to watch here.

After the double round, the team continues to Berlin for the Rookie Test on Monday 24th April, when Luca Ghiotto and Victor Martins will race for the Nissan Formula E Team.

Tommaso Volpe, General Manager and Director of the Nissan Formula E Team

“Although we have a double round this weekend, we have to face it like any other and work on adjustments and settings, to be competitive and move up in the pack. This year it will be a little easier as the two races will take place in the same direction of the track, unlike in 2022. The track surface in Berlin is a big challenge with its high grip, which can overheat the tires , so let’s try to prevent this from happening during the race. The Tempelhof circuit allows for plenty of overtaking opportunities too, providing a great spectacle for the fans. Nissan has already won here in the past and that serves as a motivation for the whole team – let’s all fight for the podium. We also have a very talented line-up for the rookie test. Luca has been testing our simulator for some time now and will be with the team in Berlin, so it will be useful for him in his new role to have some lap times on track. Victor was also at the factory recently, he has great potential as a driver and I am looking forward to seeing him on the track”.

Sacha Fenestraz

“This is the first double round since Diriyah so it will be nice to have more time on the track. This will be my first race at the Berlin Circuit, so I’m really excited to compare my development with the other riders, as many of them are already familiar with this track. I’m really motivated, we had a tough weekend in Sao Paulo and the whole team has been working really hard ever since. I spent a lot of time on the simulator, the Tempelhof circuit looks pretty cool, with plenty of opportunities for overtaking. The qualifying session will be crucial, as will energy management, as there will also be a lot of straights. The first part of the season has been positive, despite many ups and downs, but we are learning at every round, so I am really looking forward to going on the attack this weekend in Berlin.”

Norman Nato

“Running in Berlin is always special for me. I won my very first E-Prix here, so naturally I have fond memories of the city and the track. The whole team knows that this weekend will be a big opportunity due to the doubleheader. The Tempelhof circuit is tricky, where we have to focus on tire management due to the track surface. The racing line is often narrow due to the amount of tire debris left by the cars, so we need to be careful not to get caught in an incident. The target is to fight for the podium this weekend, so improving in qualifying will be vital to have a chance, but the potential is there.”
