The Banque de France published this Thursday, April 20 a survey on the payment habits of households in the euro zone, between October 2021 and June 2022. A first.

Cash or credit card? The payment habits of the French are changing from year to year, as the Banque de France was able to attest through a new survey published this Thursday, April 20, carried out over the period October 2021 – June 2022. This is the first survey on the post Covid period.

As a result, “the use of cash continues to erode in France, but to a lesser extent than in the rest of the euro zone”, indicates the institution in his press release. Indeed, the number of cash transactions represented 50% of total purchases in France for the year 2022 (compared to 57% in 2019 and 68% in 2016). At the same time, payment by credit card was 43% the same year ( once morest 37% and 27%). The remaining 7% corresponding to transfers, mobile payments and checks.

The French have also increasingly adopted a new habit: contactless payment. It now represents more than one out of two card payments at points of sale (51% in France and 62% on average in the euro zone, compared to 38% and 41% respectively in 2019). Online payments count for 20%.

Differences between households

If the end of cash is not yet for today, according to the Banque de France, their use nevertheless depends on household income and age. People over the age of 55 and vulnerable households continue to favor this payment method as a majority, making it easier to manage their budget in this inflationary context, for example.

The French still use their currency for small daily expenses, such as those made at the bakery, at the tobacco shop or at the newsstand.

As a reminder, the Banque de France is thus vigilant that cash can always be used in shops, in particular certain supermarkets which have been called to order because they forced their customers to pay by bank card.
