In the first three years following the new regulation came into force on January 1, 2020, around 185,000 holders of a car driver’s license took the opportunity to obtain a driver’s license for the 125 two-wheeler class with the help of a few driving and theory lessons.

As reported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, in relation to the number of inhabitants, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland were above the national average with 462 entries per 100,000 inhabitants aged 25 to 60. Interest was highest in Baden-Württemberg with 589 permits per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Bavaria with 555 and Hesse with 530 permits per 100,000 inhabitants. In Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, fewer use were made of the regulation with up to 300 authorizations per 100,000 inhabitants.

Three-quarters of B196 holders are men, with the 31-44 year olds and the 45-60 year olds roughly equal in age, while women are more likely to be older. Interest was generally strongest in the first year of the premiere, with 78,000 B196 entries. However, the development differs from state to state. While there was a sharp decline in Berlin last year, for example, Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania saw a significant increase once more following an above-average weak year in 2021.

To obtain the extended B196 driver’s license, the applicant must have held a car driver’s license for at least five years and be at least 25 years old. At least 13.5 hours of theoretical and practical two-wheeler training are also required. The B196 driving license does not fully replace the A1 category. A later extension to A2 is not possible. And even abroad, no light motorcycles and light scooters may be moved with it. If you got your driver’s license (class 3 at the time) before April 1, 1980, you can drive a 125 without having to take any further tests. (awm)
