According to Apache, the chemical company has been releasing PFAS for decades, but these releases are not officially authorized and are not measured. The reasoning followed is that it is very difficult to measure them and that the substances would not be particularly harmful.

However, in the wake of the PFAS crisis, debate has intensified over the potential health impact of these so-called “everlasting” substances. “Short-chain” PFASs, discussed here, are under debate following being touted as a better alternative to other types of PFASs. Persistent, they would also be more soluble in water.

The fact that 3M is now asking for discharge standards for these substances is attracting criticism. Groen asks the provincial government not to grant the requested permit. “The rejection standards proposed by 3M are much too high, much higher than what is allowed,” said Ilse Van Dienderen, provincial councilor for the Green Party.

3M declined to comment on Wednesday.
