“Aluminerie Alouette Demands Reliable Air Service from Air Canada: Financial Losses and Operational Challenges at Stake”

Disturbed by repeated flight cancellations, the managers of the Alouette aluminum smelter in Sept-Îles called on Air Canada. The unreliability of air service generates financial losses and has become a major issue for the aluminum smelter.

“What Air Canada is doing with the regions is a bit sad right now,” said Aluminerie Alouette vice-president of finance and administration, Charles-André Nadeau.

The businessman has lost count of flight cancellations that have resulted in loss of time and productivity. European shareholders of the aluminum smelter have already crossed the ocean unnecessarily since their flight to Sept-Îles was canceled.

“They did Austria-Montreal, they met in Teams and went back to Austria because the flights mightn’t get there. The reasons, we do not know them, but this time, clearly, it was not the temperature”, denounced Mr. Nadeau.

The smelter’s subcontractors regularly suffer the consequences of canceled flights.

“There are costs associated with that and it is not efficient for our processes,” continued the manager.

The low frequency of flights leads to unacceptable delays for business people, according to Charles-André Nadeau.

“My flight was canceled on a Thursday night from Montreal and the flight I was offered was on Monday.”

The Alouette aluminum smelter, which is the largest private employer in Sept-Îles, sent a letter to Air Canada at the beginning of March in which it demonstrates its dissatisfaction and affirms that the current situation significantly affects the course of its business.

By email, the vice-president of communications of Air Canada, Christophe Hennebelle who spoke Wednesday followingnoon with the vice-president of Alouette, affirms that efforts are continuing to meet operational challenges.

The general dissatisfaction with Air Canada is shared by the Minister of the Economy.

“Air Canada, I think, it’s clear, has demonstrated that it is not interested in regional transport. We have to find an alternative, that’s clear, ”said Pierre Fitzgibbon on Tuesday.

He makes a harsh statement regarding the airline’s services, but relies on the Standing Working Committee on Regional Air Transport, in which Air Canada participates.

“There may be airlines that want to offer additional services that we might help financially. We must use existing companies,” said the minister.
