“The Case of Herwig: How Faulty Inverter Software Led to a Massive Energy Bill”

Herwig, a Belgian who lives in Hoeselaar, paid nearly 15,000 euros for solar panels, a domestic battery, and an inverter. If he thought he was covering his energy needs, he found that he was consuming three times more electricity since the installation. A problem he explains to the Nieuwsblad.

His family consumed nearly 5 mWh of electricity per year. This is a lot, because for comparison, an average family in our country consumes 3.5 mWh. Faced with rising energy prices, Herwig decided to invest.

But when he received his annual statement, it was a cold shower. “It turned out that our consumption had risen to 15 mWh. The invoice amounts to 9,000 euros. Yet the habits of this family have not changed since the installation of the panels.

“It is almost impossible for the domestic battery to cause such a high additional cost. When the battery is full, it stops charging. It therefore cannot continue to draw power from the grid. »

After inspection, it turned out that the cause of this invoice was due to the inverter: “Normally, updates of the inverter are carried out automatically by the manufacturer, but due to software problems, this has caused problems for this customer. We have adjusted the settings so that the battery cannot be recharged from the network. »

Relief for Herwig, who has decided to check his meter daily! However, it remains in negotiation not to pay this energy bill.
