The N-VA indulges more and more often in this kind of denunciation.
Last March, Nabilla Ait Daoud the Antwerp alderwoman N-VA for Culture had asked the Aerenberg theater to remove photos representing the diversity of the city’s inhabitants. Photos that had replaced old portraits of Antwerpers, but which, according to her, were trying to erase history, under the woke influence. More recently, the Minister of Education Ben Weyts also referred to as “wok foil” an idea from the Flemish pupils’ dome proposing to adopt a more inclusive language in schools.
A ‘word’ that might be at the heart of the debates during the next electoral campaign in Flanders?
What is certain is that the negative reactions to the appointment of Dalilla Hermans illustrate a new kind of arm wrestling between the two major Flemish parties, the Vlaams Belang and the N-VA. By tackling wokism, Bart De Wever clearly hopes to steal votes from his main rival. But according to many observers, it risks further strengthening the radical right, as was also the case when the N-VA took up the theme of migration.
In the case of a duel between anti-woke parties, it is the Belang which is likely to win, because it will always dare to go further… Alongside a possible victory for the far right, another danger looms : that ofa cancel culture gradually silencing the voices of diversityand allowing personal and racist attacks in the name of the fight once morest Wokism.
