While Gmail has just landed in the Outlook application on Windows, a bug has been annoying users for some time now. Indeed, when you reply to an email containing long links in the body, it was possible to have the following error message : “Unable to send this item”.

According to Microsoft, Outlook displays this error when the 2084th character of a link is an escape character. Remember that in computing, an escape character is a character that triggers an alternative interpretation of the character or characters that follow it, such as \ for example.

A problem with long URLs in Outlook

As specified by the manufacturer, this situation can occur with long URLs and when processed with safe links. When Safe Links wraps the URL, it exceeds Outlook’s 2084 limit for URLs. Result, the URL is truncated.

Note that there are other common consequences related to this issue:

  • URLs are truncated and when clicked you may see a 404 error
  • When you click on a link, Microsoft Defender may display an error message “Unable to load the page you are trying to access” et ” Due to an internal error, this web page might not be loaded. We recommend that you close this page

Microsoft has finally fixed the problem

If you are a victim of this problem, good news, however. Indeed, Microsoft has just fixed this bug via a new update for Outlook Desktop and Windows. According to the Redmond firm, this bug no longer exists on Outlook Desktop build 16116.10000.

To put an end to this concern, Microsoft has opted for a simple but effective solution: increase URL limit from 2084 to 8192 characters. Note that this update has been available since April 4, 2023. Regarding the Enterprise channel, however, the patch will be deployed with the latest build 2302.

As a reminder, this is not the first time thatOutlook is the victim of a few technical hiccups. In February 2023, the spam filter was no longer working and users were inundated with scams. In August 2022, the Microsoft service simply crashed when opening an email containing a table.
