European Parliament pushes for anti-discrimination directive to be passed following 15 years of standstill
Strasbourg (OTS) – In a resolution today in Strasbourg, the European Parliament confirmed the demand for the anti-discrimination directive to be passed quickly and put pressure on the Council to act quickly.
Monika Vana, head of the Austrian Green Party delegation in the European Parliament, on today’s vote: “We demand that the Council process the urgently needed anti-discrimination directive by the end of the year and are ready to vote on it as the European Parliament before the end of the legislative period. The directive has been blocked in the Council for 15 years. That’s shameful. In the face of the alarming backlash once morest gender equality and LGBTIQ rights in some EU member countries, the EU needs more than ever to live up to its mandate and obligation to actively fight discrimination!”
On the effectiveness of the Directive: “One in five people in the EU will experience discrimination or harassment on various or a combination of grounds. The Directive aims to extend protection once morest discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, religion or belief and sexual orientation beyond the labor market to include social protection, healthcare, education, housing and access to goods and services. The adoption of the horizontal Anti-Discrimination Directive would provide a comprehensive framework to fight discrimination at EU level and fill existing gaps to ensure equal protection for all,” Vana concludes.
