With more than 41 million people at risk during this year’s lean season, the food insecurity situation is becoming alarming in West and Central Africa.
So says the World Bank, which also estimates in a new report that 29 million people currently depend on emergency food aid.
The financial institution attributed the high incidence of malnutrition in the region to fragility and conflict, high levels of poverty, accelerating climate change, low agricultural productivity and environmental degradation. .
The latest food insecurity warning is also echoed by the UN food agency, the World Food Programme, which estimates the number of people in West and Central Africa at 48 million, as efforts to contain the inflation contribute to food shortages.
To deal with this situation, the World Bank has adopted a regional approach to strengthen the resilience of the food system and mobilize emergency response funds from the International Development Association.
