On Saturday April 15, 2023, around 10:20 p.m., the chief clerk of the Diré justice of the peace with extended jurisdiction was kidnapped by unidentified armed men in the Barikobe district. According to a local source, the named BS was intercepted by four individuals armed with AK-47s as he left a shop not far from his home. The attackers then fled towards the plain of Saoune with their hostage, whose motive for the arrest remains unknown.
The Free Syndicate of Magistracy (SYLMA) expressed, in a press release dated April 17, its deep compassion towards the chief clerk and his family, victims of an unjust deprivation of liberty. The union also showed its solidarity with all clerks and secretaries of clerks and prosecutors in Mali, as well as the National Union of Clerks and Secretaries of Registry and Prosecutors of Mali (SYNAG).
However, SYLMA also expressed its regret at the attitude of the Malian government, which does not seem to attach sufficient importance to the safety of judicial and court personnel in the event of danger. The union called on the government to keep its promise to do everything possible to bring the chief clerk back safely to his family, and to act quickly and effectively in this crisis situation. SYLMA also strongly condemned violence in all its forms.
In short, this kidnapping is tragic news that reminds us of the urgency of strengthening security in risk areas and protecting the judicial personnel who work there. SYLMA and SYNAG remain mobilized to defend the interests of clerks and secretaries of clerks and prosecutors in Mali, and to support their colleagues in distress.
